++ System Change Camp in Hamburg Approved ++ Thousands Expected for Protest Camp against Gas and Neocolonialism ++

Ende Gelände in Hamburg’s Stadtpark. – For the period from August 9 to 15, a broad alliance of left-wing and climate groups has registered a protest camp in the Stadtpark Hamburg. Under the title ‘System Change Camp’, workshops, lectures and other educational activities will take place there for a week, in which climate politics, postcolonialism and anti-capitalism will be discussed.

“We want to connect with Hamburg’s population and welcome people from all backgrounds to our camp,” says Luka Scott of the alliance organizing the System Change Camp, “Our broad workshop program is open to all citizens* interested in climate policy and we look forward to engaging in conversation over meals prepared together.”

The protest camp is explicitly directed against the new construction of terminals for liquefied natural gas (LNG). Besides climate groups like ‘Ende Gelände’, ‘Extinction Rebellion’ and ‘Expropriate RWE & Co’, among others ‘Abya Yala Anticolonial’, a group of Central and South Americans who continue the struggle against the colonial order, and the antimilitarist group ‘Disarm Rheinmetall’ call for participation in the camp. With the joint political camp, the groups want to explicitly draw attention to the links between the climate crisis, neocolonialism and wars.

Charly Dietz sums it up as follows: “We are fighting for social, economic and ecological justice worldwide, at eye level and hand in hand with the Most Affected People and Areas. This requires a fundamental system change. At the System Change Camp, we want to bring together different perspectives and struggles to learn from and with each other. Only in this way can we create a climate of justice and solidarity.”

In its leading decision of May 2022, the Federal Administrative Court granted protest camps special legal protection. According to this decision, infrastructure and overnight tents are also protected under the freedom of assembly. The activists see themselves strengthened by the decision and are looking forward to the camp in the city park of Hamburg.

After all, there is plenty of reason to protest: The decision to expand infrastructure for LNG has led to criticism from broad sections of the climate movement. The key points of concern are the production of LNG using fracking technology, which is banned in Germany, the emissions that are produced during the combustion, the production, and transport of LNG. During the course of the camp, there will be calls for action in Hamburg and the surrounding area to oppose the expansion of LNG infrastructure.

NEWSLETTER CLIMATE ANTIREPRESSION #22 – August 2023

13. September 2023 Welcome to newsletter number 22, a schnapps number this time. Fittingly, we are celebrating our birthday this year and are still here for you after 10 years - because repression has unfortunately not stopped. The focus this time is on how the police actually identify people from whom they have not received any personal data, based on our experiences so far. Continue reading ...
