Erkelenz, 26 September, 2020

In the early morning hours, more than 3,000 activists of the international climate justice movement Ende Gelaende  (“Here And No Further”) set off for power plants and open-cast mines in the Rhineland mining area. With actions of civil disobedience, they plan to block coal and gas infrastructure. Ende Gelaende is calling for an immediate coal phase–out and an end to fossil capitalism. Right next to the blockades, Fridays for Future plans a demonstration at the Garzweiler open-cast mine.

“While the climate crisis is coming to a head, the German government is delaying the fossil-fuel phase-out and giving billions to coal corporations. A coal phase-out in 2038 is a climate crime and makes it impossible to achieve the Paris climate target. For this reason, we now take the coal phase-out into our own hands.” says Ronja Weil, press spokeswoman of Ende Gelaende

Paula Eisner, also press spokeswoman of Ende Gelaende adds: “The time for system change is now: capitalism is out of control. The growth-driven capitalism accelerates the climate crisis to a critical extent. Our protest today demands climate justice and a solidary society”.

In order to ensure the safety of the participants in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ende Gelaende worked out a comprehensive hygiene concept. This includes the organization of several small base stations instead of one large camp and a traceability concept for infections. All activists will keep physical distance and wear facial masks. Further information on infection protection can be found here: https://www.ende-gelaende.org/en/hygiene-concept-2020-en/

Since 2015, Ende Gelaende has repeatedly blocked coal infrastructure with thousands of people in the Rhineland and Lusatia regions. Traditionally, people from all over Europe take part in the actions of Ende Gelaende.
