Press Release, 16 September 2020

Berlin / Erkelenz,  16 September 2020

For the weekend of 25–27 September the anti-coal alliance Ende Gelände announces actions of civil disobedience in the Rhineland coal mining area. Activists will protest against the German government’s climate policy and demand an immediate coal phase-out as well as a fundamental system change. The Anti-Kohle-Kidz, an alliance of young climate activists, will also take part in the actions. Parallel to the actions of Ende Gelände, Fridays for Future is organising the next global strike on Friday, September 25th.

Ronja Weil, spokesperson of Ende Gelände: “Extending coal mining until 2038 is a climate crime! 18 more years of coal will make it impossible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. Now it is decided what will be left of the Paris Agreement: We are committing civil disobedience to fight the insane coal policy of the German government.”

Paula Eisner, spokesperson of Ende Gelände: “The failure in climate policy is systemic. More and more economic growth will fuel the climate crisis even further instead of stopping it. We need a fundamental system change to counter global warming. We will fight for a just and solidary society in which neither people nor nature are exploited.”

In order to ensure the safety of the participants in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ende Gelände worked out a comprehensive hygiene concept. This includes the organization of several small base stations instead of one large camp and a traceability concept for infections. All activists will keep physical distance and wear facial masks. Further information on infection protection can be found here: https://www.ende-gelaende.org/en/hygiene-concept-2020-en/

We cordially invite journalists to report about the actions. We will inform about dates for press conferences and press briefings in the following days.

Ende Gelände organizes actions of civil disobedience against coal infrastructure since 2015. Last year thousands of activists took part in protests in the Rhineland and Lusatia regions.
